The Concept of The Flowers

Jan 10, 2025

Conceptualising an idea is hard. I know because it took me years to come up with the name for this brand and a couple more years to design a logo that I was satisfied with. Whether this was indicative of the process of creating cool content afterward, I do not know. What I do know is that it got easier to start but harder to finish.

Like most of my other ideas, coming up with The Flowers was organic and chaotic. I initially just wanted to make an animated short inspired by an anime character: Steven Starphase from Blood Blockade Battlefront.

The title was based on a homophone of the words Crepes and Creps (Crep'e's) - since I loved shoes and those sweet and savoury pancake-style delicacies. It was about two enforcers going to "collect" or "deliver" something. The majority of the short was supposed to focus on just one character. I wanted a lot of martial arts action because I was interested in Savate (French Kickboxing) and wanted to display it with animation. But something changed, I asked myself questions about the purpose of the characters: why were they in that situation, who were the antagonists, and what was the real purpose of the episode? Could it be bigger than what it was?

All these questions led me down a rabbit hole of ideas which culminated in the creation of The Flowers. Over time, I built a team of four characters, of different nationalities, and unique personalities in a unique world. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that anyone can start with a plan to do something. But in the middle of that, something even better could be born.
